L.A. Countdown

The Countdown begins! Only four more days until we leave for the L.A. SCBWI Conference. And, oh my goodness, I'm not ready. Does anyone else out there wish that this conference was one month later? It would be great if it were AFTER the kids were settled into school. And, AFTER I've had a block of time. Alone. To work.

I'm looking forward to this year's conference more than ever--great friends, great speakers . . . I'm looking for some great inspiration and help with my work. My big plan is to come home from the conference ON FIRE and ready to tackle my wip (a middle grade Southern mystery).

Plus, I've signed up for the portfolio showcase (as of this morning). I'm nervous about it because my portfolio isn't slick, but I hated not to do it. Maybe I'll get some good feedback--or maybe I'll just be embarrassed--but I didn't want to miss such a great opportunity. And, I've got my notebook ready for my crazy note-taking! Law school was a waste. I should have been a court reporter.

Ugh. I haven't even thought about packing. That may have to wait until Thursday morning.

Man, I can't wait to settle into that crunchy polyester seat on the plane. L.A. bound, baby!!

First, have a wonderful time. Second, if you're taking the illustrations you've recently posted then I don't know what you're all worried about. You are a talented lady.

And last, if you had a super power you'd be the Super Scribbler. I have never seen such detailed notes. Did you get teased in school?

Everyone's going... : ( Sad (for me).

Next Year I am so there (hopefully).

I'm so jealous of you guys! If I had the money, or even an agent to feel worthy of such events I would join you guys! lol.

I may be able to afford to go in 2011. lol.

I hope you have a great time! Good feedback, relaxation, rubbing shoulders with publishing/art people. Have fun!

I closed my eyes for just a second, and July disappeared. I know this because I had all of these awesome plans for July--complete the first draft of mY WIP, being one of them--and this did not happen. Some really wicked guy is holding July hostage in his damp basement somewhere, and he forgot to send the ransom note.

Ah well. Perhaps what I really need is a kick in the rear to get me going. Here's to hoping that the SCBWI will be just the inspiration I need. If not, I still get to sit around all star struck, fighting back the drool from being in the presence of so much awesomeness.

Best of luck in the portfolio showcase!

Yes, I wish it wasn't this weekend!!

I have never been before (even though I live only about an hour and a half away) but I only recently joined SCBWI........and this was going to be my first time.......but this weekend I have a family obligation.......sigh.

So blog lots so I can experience it vicariously.

So jealous! Enjoy every second and take lots of good notes for those of us stuck at home.

And LMJ is totally write, you have NOTHING to worry about for your portfolio review. Seriously.

And whatever you do, make sure you get a pic of Katie in the jumpsuit. This is crucial. I can't wait to see her rocking a look that makes 99% of American women look like they're an extraordinarily large toddler. She's going to look amazing and I'm going to be jealous that she looks good in clothes that Gwynnie wears and I'm lucky if I can pull off whatever Bonnie Hunt is wearing on her lame ass talk show.

Oh dear. I have now realized that I was shamelessly fishing for ego-boosting compliments about my illustrations. Shameless!! But, thanks guys. It is a little daunting putting yourself out there like that.

Yes, the Super Scribbler will be in action, so stay tuned. And, Miss J, I probably got teased behind my back but NEVER to my face--because everybody wanted my notes!!!

And, Lila. Clarification. The exact wording on the tag of Katie's outfit was "romper". I will take many pictures. She totally pulls it off. It's an amazing feat, really.

Bonnie Hunt has a talk show? Really??? Where have I been??

I can't wait!!! Can. Not. Wait!

And let me say that the "romper" has been steamed and is packed :)

It's probably too dressy, but oh well. We will definitely post pics!

StoryQueen, I wish we were the type that blogged from conferences, but alas, we are not.

However, SF is THE ULTIMATE in nerd notes. She will have the BEST re-cap of the classes found anywhere online. Seriously, it's a freak of nature. I'm just so glad to call her my friend because I will call her for months asking things like, "What was that book that Agent X referenced?" So check back next week!

Kisses!
