Changing Perspectives

Today, I shall ramble...

First of all, while SF's darlings were playing naked Barbies, mine had 9 extra girls spend the
night, dressed in black, put war paint on, and rolled the neighbors houses - only the ones in which cute boys slept, of course.

In other news, I have been playing around with my second novel this month. After trying out at least six different beginnings that were not working, I picked up my favorite magical book of all time, HARRY POTTER, and decided to try working in 3rd person, past tense like my dear friend Jo :)

Viola! *magic happened* I was having a hard time getting into my MC's head, whereas I could clearly see what was happening around her. So, this way, I can watch and report from outside the scene in order to find the story. Does that make sense? I think it's going to work better. Like the famous HP, my new story is also magical so we'll see what happens.

And finally, I took the girls to see Percy Jackson today! Verdict: AWESOME! Look at little Percy - he's a hottie, no?
I think he might be the inspiration for my next MC's love interest - and speaking of inspiration... SF and I are working on a cool series of inspirational posts profiling other artists. These will include chefs, painters, clothing designers, singers and other such artsy people and what inspires them. I can't wait to find out!

That's all for now. Have a fabulous week!

Katie

It's funny how sometimes changing the point of view completely changes the story! I never thought to write in first person and having just tried it out I realize that is what is perfect for my current novel.

Those girls are so cute in their war paint. Memories . . . ahhhh.

Yay! For kickin' it on your newest novel. It's gonna be a great one.

Six different beginnings...that sounds like something I'd do!

But it's really hard when the voice you're using isn't the one the story wants to be told in.

I'm glad you found something that works.

Good Luck!

Naked Barbies?!

I have a story that was written in 3ed person and I was told the reader wasn't connecting to the MC. So I rewrote it in 1st person and she became very 3 dimentional and real! A perspective change can make the difference :-)

Now about those kids... how can you possibly be old enough to have a child that age??!!!

Hoorah for finding a beginning that actually works! We've got four chapters down on our latest and we've been doing a lot of tinkering. It really takes time to get the right voice and the right tone for those critical first pages. Oy.

LOVE this!! Curious what cute nieghbor boys reactions were to the TP rolling.
I did the same thing with my WIP. Started off in first, then changed to third and loved it better!
First time writing in third so still a little tripped up with whether it should be limited POV to the MC or omniscient (sees all)--what did you do?

well, because Christina asked... the girls wrote "hottie" in one of the boy's yards - so we awoke to a retalitory (sp?) roll in my yard with the word "sexy" written on the lawn. ha!

And I have barely started this third person thing - so I am not sure about the POV?? I will probably get into my MCs thoughts but not the others. I'm not sure what that's called?

And Gail, you made my day!!!!!! But yes, I am almost 40 - so old enough to have a teen :-)

Finding the right pov and tone for a story is crucial. Congrats on finding yours! :)

I suck at writing 3P ... everything falls flat on the page when I try. But you, I'm sure, will kick it out of the park. And I know this because sometimes I pretend to be psychic. Best of luck!!

I'm too young to feel like a cougar... but HELLO kid who plays Percy Jackson!

On of my CPs is in the process of changing the POV for one of her MCs, and it's like a lightbulb went off! I hope you find the same success :-)

I wrote the opening for my new novel in both 3rd and 1st before I decided on a pov, too! Funny how that happens :)
